The greatest takeaway I have about personal style from living in both Paris and New York is that commuters dress better. Shielding one’s self from the elements requires forethought, practicality, and a working knowledge,of fabrics. Sure, wearing a scarf in Paris is chic, but it serves a serious purpose of protection from the rainy winds. It’s possibly why Autumn is my wardrobe’s favorite season. A well made coat paired with boots offers endless possibilities for personal style direction.
Dressing stylishly for unpleasant weather is a skill. As a native of Los Angeles where cars rule, it’s not uncommon to see folks exit their vehicles wearing flip-flops paired with shorts and hoodie for a trip to CVS. The infrastructure was created on the myth of sunshine and suburbs, ignorant to the realities that Los Angeles is a metropolis. The public transportation system is just catching up.
El Nino is predicted to bring flooding, mudslides, and all manner of activities associated with a rain storm. You’re going to need a better wardrobe.
BUT! Before you search “rain boots” into your favorite algorithm centered shopping site, take inventory of what you already have. If you own hiking boots and a jacket from Pantagonia, you’re more prepared than you think. The challenge is to style them away from utilitarianism and own it with your unique personal style. Which, by the way, is the purpose of a personal stylist.
